Lost cryptocurrency after a Ledger-related impersonation scam?
WRS is investigating potential claims where Ledger customer information may have been exposed and later used by scammers to target customers and cause cryptocurrency losses.
Our solicitors can assess whether there may be a viable route to pursue Ledger and/or another relevant party where the evidence supports a clear connection between the data exposure and the loss.

THE CHALLENGE
How exposed customer information can make a scam more convincing

Fraudsters do not need access to a Ledger hardware wallet to exploit information that makes an approach feel genuine.
Where customer information has been exposed, a scammer may know a person’s name, email address, telephone number, postal address, order information and/or that they own a Ledger device. That knowledge can make an unsolicited call, text or email appear far more credible.
The scammer may then claim to be Ledger, law enforcement, a security team, an exchange or another trusted organisation and create urgency around the safety of the customer’s crypto.
The legal issue WRS is exploring is whether a clear evidential link can be established between the exposure of customer data and the subsequent financial loss.
Cryptocurrency Tracing for Family Law
At Wealth Recovery Solicitors, we combine legal expertise with specialist blockchain analysis to help family law professionals and individuals understand the movement, value and potential location of cryptocurrency assets.
Depending on the available evidence and scope of the instruction, our work may include:
• Wallet and transaction tracing – following cryptocurrency movements between identifiable wallet addresses and building a chronological transaction trail.
• Exchange and service identification – identifying interactions with known exchanges, custodians, bridges or other services where the available data supports that conclusion.
• Cross-chain analysis – tracing relevant movements across different blockchains where the transaction data and available tooling allow this to be done reliably.
• Historical balance reconstruction – reviewing holdings and activity at relevant points in time where sufficient blockchain data is available.
• Asset quantification – helping quantify digital assets and transaction values so the legal team has a clearer evidential picture.

What Information Can Help Us Begin an Investigation?

The information available at the outset can affect what can be investigated and how efficiently the tracing work can be scoped.
Useful material may include:
• Known wallet addresses
• Transaction IDs or blockchain explorer links
• Cryptocurrency exchange statements or account exports
• Bank statements showing payments to or from exchanges
• Transaction histories or CSV exports from wallets or exchanges
• Relevant emails, messages or correspondence relating to digital assets
• Existing Form E disclosure or other financial disclosure concerning cryptocurrency
Never send us a cryptocurrency seed phrase, private key or recovery phrase. These are not required for blockchain analysis and should never be shared with another person or organisation.
When Might Cryptocurrency Tracing Be Appropriate?
Cryptocurrency tracing may be worth considering where the available financial information raises questions about digital assets. These indicators do not necessarily prove that cryptocurrency has been concealed, but they may justify further investigation.

Expert Evidence and FPR Part 25

Where formal expert evidence is required in family proceedings, the Family Procedure Rules govern how that evidence is obtained and used. Expert evidence in proceedings other than children proceedings may only be put before the court with permission, and in financial remedy proceedings an application for permission should normally be made no later than the first appointment unless the court directs otherwise.
Where we are instructed to provide expert evidence, the report can be prepared in accordance with the relevant requirements of FPR Part 25 and the applicable practice directions, subject to the scope of the court’s permission and the instructions received.
When acting as an expert for the purposes of family proceedings, the expert’s overriding duty is to assist the court on matters within their expertise. That duty takes precedence over any obligation to the party who instructed or pays the expert.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Does being affected by a Ledger-related data incident automatically mean I have a claim?
No. Each matter needs to be assessed on its own facts. We would consider the available evidence, the circumstances of the scam and the financial loss before advising whether there may be a viable legal route.
-
What if I do not know whether my information was exposed?
You do not need to know this before contacting us. We can review the information you have and consider whether further enquiries may be appropriate.
-
What if the scammer pretended to be the police, an exchange or another organisation rather than Ledger?
That does not necessarily prevent the matter from being assessed. Impersonation scams can take different forms, so we would look at the circumstances of the approach and the available evidence.
-
Is every Ledger-related loss covered by this investigation?
No. Ledger-related incidents can arise in different ways and may require different legal and technical analysis. We can assess whether your circumstances appear relevant to this investigation or may need to be considered separately.
-
What if I authorised the transfer myself?
You may still be able to have the matter assessed. Fraudsters often persuade victims to take actions themselves. The circumstances surrounding the transfer and the wider evidence would need to be reviewed.
-
What information should I keep?
Keep any relevant emails, messages, call records, transaction details, wallet addresses, exchange records, screenshots and correspondence connected with what happened. You do not need to organise everything before contacting us.
-
Do you need my seed phrase, recovery phrase or private key?
No. Never send us your seed phrase, recovery phrase, private key, wallet password or PIN. These are not required for an initial assessment and should not be shared with anyone.
